An instrument cluster for two-wheelers in 2015.
User research, requirements management and interaction design for safe access to mobile phone data via bike handlebar and cluster display on prototype
Showcased at Consumer Electronics Show(CES), Las Vegas 2013 and generated business interest for potential business win worth $250M from a major automaker.
Consumer Research
Ideation workshops were conducted organisation wide and market study of existing products was carried out in tandem. A set of features evolved as ideas that needed to be validated.
Online survey & user interviews were conducted across Pune & Chennai with 400+ participants (wherein 49% belong to age-group of 25-30yrs). The survey was also carried out to understand information needs of two wheeler riders while driving -

User preferences for cluster data & new bike features
The exercise led to persona development, scenarios + aligning specific user needs to envisioned features.
Information Design
For System -
Software sequence diagrams were charted post discussions with embedded system engineers to -
Communicate implementation to multi-disciplinary team & stakeholders
Identify constraints and workarounds for feature implementation
Arrive at a feasible demo sequence for user walkthroughs
Identify requirements for demo controller - mobile app
For Cluster -
The challenges were -
retention of the essential/regulatory driver information
choice and placement of new information legibly without distraction
match data type with display type and cost + real-estate constraints
feasibility for appropriate display combo & shape - working with industrial designers & international display manufacturers
Interface Design
For Cluster -
Data exchanges between mobile app and varied sections of display - dot matrix/segmented were reflected in wireframes.
For Controller -
Rendered wireframes, identified and co-ordinated with vendors for graphic design cum development.
Interaction Design
The placement, nature and types of existing handle-bar controls were studied. Worked with industrial designer & prototyping team to introduce suitable controls for effective navigation of new interfaces.
